Almora, May 23: The incidents of forest fires are on the rise across Uttarakhand, including Almora. Several areas are experiencing damage to forest resources, raising concerns among local authorities. In light of this, Pradeep Kumar, the DFO of the Civil Soyam Forest Division, has provided updates and urged the public to exercise caution.
He noted that there has been a continuous rise in temperatures over the past few days, leading to an increase in forest fire incidents. Although a brief rainfall on Friday resulted in a slight temperature drop of about one degree, the heat and dry conditions persist. Consequently, the risk of fires has not been completely mitigated.
The DFO reported receiving a total of 51 alerts, with three to four locations suffering minor damage due to fires. Approximately three hectares of forest area have been affected, but the forest department’s team acted swiftly to control the flames.
Kumar emphasized that the entire staff of the forest department is working in alert mode. Whenever a fire is reported, a team is dispatched immediately to extinguish it. Additionally, local forest councils are also collaborating to combat fires in their respective areas.
He mentioned that the district magistrate has issued directives to raise awareness among the public and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities immediately. Kumar highlighted that there have been instances where individuals intentionally set fires, which is a serious concern.
He also revealed that some individuals have been apprehended in connection with these incidents, and actions are being taken against them. So far, the process has progressed in 5 to 6 cases across the district. The forest department has instructed relevant officials, council representatives, and secretaries to remain vigilant in their respective areas.
The DFO appealed to the public to report any suspicious activities to the police station or the forest department. He stated that protecting the forests is not solely the responsibility of the administration but a duty for every citizen. He reassured that the department is making every effort to control the fires as quickly as possible, but local awareness and cooperation are crucial.
