New Delhi, June 6: Germany has suffered a significant blow just before the start of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Young attacking midfielder Leonhart Karl has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury.
Coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed the news on Saturday, stating that Karl sustained a thigh injury during training in the United States. The 18-year-old player experienced a muscle strain in his left thigh during a training session in Chicago on Friday and was subsequently taken to the hospital. As a result, Germany has called up Assan Ouedraogo to replace Karl in the World Cup squad.
Nagelsmann expressed his deep regret over Karl’s injury, highlighting the player’s positive attitude, creative play, speed, and strong personality that had earned him a special place in the team. Karl’s absence is seen as a major setback for Germany, especially considering his outstanding performances this season. The young midfielder has emerged as one of Europe’s most promising talents, consistently drawing attention with his exceptional displays.
Karl played a crucial role for Bayern Munich throughout the season. His impressive form helped the team secure the domestic double and reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. His energy, creativity, and ability to control matches made him an essential player for the team, which is why he was included in Germany’s World Cup plans.
Germany has chosen Ouedraogo as Karl’s replacement. Nagelsmann encouraged the young player to seize this opportunity on a grand stage. He stated, “With Assan Ouedraogo, we have a player who, like Karl, has made a fantastic start with us. He is very talented and is here to play with courage and freedom.”
Germany arrived in the United States on Tuesday to finalize preparations for the World Cup, which begins next week. The four-time world champions aim to end a long drought on the international stage after being eliminated in the group stage of the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
