Rising Political Star: Samrat Chaudharys Ascendancy in Bihar Politics

Patna, April 14: Samrat Chaudhary’s political stature has significantly increased following his election as the leader of the BJP legislative party in Bihar. This move solidifies his position as the likely next Chief Minister of the state.

The announcement was made by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan during the legislative party meeting. Although Chaudhary began his political journey with the RJD, the BJP has provided him with everything a dedicated political worker aspires for.

From a young age, Samrat Chaudhary has been closely involved in politics. His father, Shakuni Chaudhary, was a prominent leader in the RJD, having served as an MLA and MP multiple times. His mother, Parvati Devi, was also an MLA from the Tarapur constituency. In the last assembly elections, Samrat Chaudhary emerged victorious from Munger’s Tarapur. Before joining the BJP, he was associated with both the RJD and JD(U).

Chaudhary entered active politics in 1990 and took oath as Bihar’s Agriculture Minister on May 19, 1999. He contested elections from the Parbatta constituency in 2000 and 2010, winning both times. In 2010, he was appointed the chief whip of the opposition in the Bihar Assembly.

Since 2018, he has been recognized as a BJP leader. In 2019, when Nityanand Rai was the state president of the BJP, Chaudhary was appointed as the state vice president, marking his rise as a significant leader within the party. His political identity grew stronger when Nitish Kumar severed ties with the BJP to form a grand alliance with the RJD.

Chaudhary became the leader of the opposition in the Legislative Council. He famously declared that he would remove Nitish Kumar from the Chief Minister’s position, showcasing his determination. In 2023, he was appointed the state president of the BJP, and when Nitish Kumar returned to the NDA, Chaudhary secured the position of Deputy Chief Minister. He is expected to be a key target for the opposition in the upcoming 2025 assembly elections.

After the NDA government is formed post-elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar entrusted him with the Home Ministry, a significant move as it marked the first time Kumar relinquished this responsibility while serving as Chief Minister.
