New Delhi, April 19: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee has labeled Prime Minister Modi’s address to the nation misleading following the failure of the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha. She stated that the Prime Minister has misled the country on this issue.
In a post on the social media platform X, Banerjee expressed her disappointment, stating it is unfortunate that the Prime Minister chose to mislead the nation instead of addressing the issue honestly. She emphasized that the Trinamool Congress has always supported higher political representation for women. Currently, women make up 37.9 percent of elected members in the Lok Sabha, and the party has nominated 46 percent women in the Rajya Sabha. She firmly stated that there is no question of opposing women’s reservation, nor has there ever been.
Banerjee condemned the Modi government’s attempts to use women as a shield to conceal its vested interests through redistricting. She criticized the manipulation of Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution, the division of the country, and the alteration of political boundaries to grant BJP-ruled states greater representation. She called this an attack on federal democracy and vowed that they would not remain silent.
The TMC leader questioned the government’s seriousness regarding women’s rights, asking why it waited nearly three years after the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed on September 28, 2023. She pointed out the rush to pass the bill amidst upcoming elections and its connection to redistricting. The Trinamool Congress has stood for women for decades and will continue to do so, she asserted, but they will not accept lectures from a ruling party that neither understands nor respects the issue.
Addressing Prime Minister Modi directly, she urged him to show the courage to speak from the parliamentary floor next time, where his every word would be scrutinized, and he would be held accountable. She described his recent actions as cowardly, hypocritical, and cunning, suggesting he senses power slipping from his grasp and is willing to go to any lengths to remain in control.
