New York, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : In an intense semifinal match at the US Open, the duo of India’s Revati Rajeshwaran and Ukraine’s Antonina Sushkova faced defeat against American sisters Kristina and Annika Penikova on Saturday. The match took place on Court 12, where the pair lost with scores of 6-7 (3), 2-6, ending their remarkable run in the tournament.
Revati and Sushkova had previously triumphed over the fourth-seeded Russian duo of Felicita Dorofeeva-Ribas and Anna Pushkareva in the quarterfinals. However, the Penikova sisters proved to be a formidable challenge. The match lasted one hour and six minutes, concluding the girls’ doubles journey for the Indian-Ukrainian pair.
Throughout the match, Revati and Sushkova showcased competitive spirit, breaking their opponents’ serve twice in the first set. Despite this, the American players capitalized on their first serve, winning 74% of their points, compared to 60% for Revati and Sushkova. The duo performed better on second serves, claiming 48% of those points, while the Penikova sisters managed only 31%. The first set was tightly contested, ultimately reaching a tiebreaker where the Penikova sisters emerged victorious.
In the second set, the American duo elevated their game, while Revati and Sushkova struggled, losing their serve twice. The Penikova sisters excelled, winning 85% of their first serves and 63% of their second serves. In contrast, Revati and Sushkova secured only 67% and 40% of their respective serves.
Earlier in the tournament, Revati and Sushkova had defeated the fifth-seeded Czech pair of Katrina Juzhikova and Jana Kovakova in the round of 16. Despite their semifinal exit, Revati also made a mark in the junior singles, reaching the second round after defeating America’s Emery Combs, though she was eliminated in the round of 32 by Irina Maligina. Additionally, in doubles, Revati partnered with America’s Thea Froden and reached the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon Juniors.
