New Delhi, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : England’s Test captain Joe Root has made a remarkable return to leadership, guiding his team to a clean sweep against Pakistan in a three-match home series, winning 3-0. With this victory, Root has also set a new record in Test cricket.
Root has become the player with the most catches as a fielder in Test history, surpassing Australian great Steve Smith. He now holds the record with 220 catches, while Smith has 219. Following them are India’s former captain Rahul Dravid with 210 catches, Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene with 205, and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis with 200.
While Root’s captaincy shone, his batting performance in the series did not match his usual standards. He scored 164 runs in five innings, including two half-centuries, with a top score of 66.
In the all-time run-scoring list for Test cricket, Root ranks second. Since his debut in 2012, he has amassed 14,278 runs in 169 Tests and 309 innings, featuring 41 centuries and 69 half-centuries, boasting an average of 50.45. His highest score is 262.
The record for most runs in Test cricket still belongs to India’s Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 15,921 runs in 200 Tests from 1989 to 2013, including 51 centuries and 68 half-centuries, with a top score of 248 not out.
