Remembering Satish Kaul: The Amitabh Bachchan of Punjabi Cinema

Mumbai, April 10: Satish Kaul was once a superstar in the Punjabi film industry. Fans affectionately referred to him as the ‘Amitabh Bachchan of Punjabi cinema.’ He gained nationwide fame by portraying Indra Dev in the epic television series ‘Mahabharat.’ However, despite his success, the final chapter of his life was filled with pain and struggle.

Born on September 8, 1946, in Kashmir, Satish Kaul’s journey tells a story of success, popularity, and eventual hardship. His father, Mohan Lal Kaul, was a renowned Kashmiri poet. After completing his schooling in Srinagar, he pursued his dream of acting at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. His classmates included notable actors like Danny Denzongpa, Jaya Bachchan, and Shatrughan Sinha.

In the 1970s, Kaul began his career in Punjabi films. His romantic and emotional roles quickly made him a favorite in Punjabi cinema. He delivered remarkable performances in films such as ‘Sassi Punnu,’ ‘Ishq Nimana,’ ‘Suhaag Chura,’ ‘Patola,’ ‘Azadi,’ ‘Shera De Putt Sher,’ ‘Moula Jatt,’ and ‘Pinga Pyar Diyan.’ Over a career spanning more than four decades, he acted in nearly 300 films, winning the hearts of Punjabi audiences.

In addition to his work in Punjabi cinema, Kaul also tried his luck in Hindi films. He appeared in movies like ‘Warrant,’ ‘Karma,’ ‘Aag Hi Aag,’ ‘Commando,’ ‘Ram Lakhan,’ and ‘Pyar To Hona Hi Tha.’ However, he did not achieve the same level of success in Hindi cinema as he did in Punjabi films.

Kaul’s career took a significant turn with B.R. Chopra’s religious TV show ‘Mahabharat.’ His portrayal of Indra Dev made him a household name. He also played memorable roles in TV shows like ‘Vikram Aur Betal’ and ‘Circus’ alongside Shah Rukh Khan.

Shah Rukh Khan once mentioned in an interview that watching Satish Kaul’s film inspired him to pursue acting. In recognition of his contributions to Punjabi cinema, he received the PTC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.

However, Kaul faced immense personal challenges. After a few years of marriage, he divorced, and his wife took their son away. In 2011, he moved from Mumbai to Ludhiana, where he opened an acting school, but it faced financial difficulties. His struggles continued when he suffered a broken hip in 2015, which left him bedridden for two and a half years. His financial situation deteriorated to the point where he had to sell his home.

During a long hospital stay, Kaul openly shared his pain in an interview, stating that he felt completely helpless and had no one to care for him. He appealed for help from the film industry, but despite many promises, assistance did not come. Satish Kaul passed away on April 10, 2021, at the age of 74.
