
Mumbai, June 4: Renowned filmmaker and former chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Pehlaj Nihalani, has passed away at the age of 76. His demise has cast a shadow over Bollywood, sparking discussions about his illustrious career and the many intriguing stories associated with him. One notable tale involves actor Govinda, whom Pehlaj was the first to recognize as a hidden superstar.
From a young age, Pehlaj Nihalani was drawn to the world of films and entertainment. He embarked on his filmmaking journey in 1982 with the movie ‘Hathkadi,’ featuring prominent actors like Shatrughan Sinha, Reena Roy, and Sanjeev Kumar. His breakthrough came in 1985 with ‘Aandhi-Toofan,’ which established him as a successful producer. Gradually, he became one of the most anticipated filmmakers in the industry.
A pivotal moment in his career occurred in 1986 when he produced the film ‘Ilzaam.’ This film marked Govinda’s debut as a hero in Bollywood. Pehlaj has often recounted an interesting anecdote from their first meeting. He admitted, “When Govinda first came to meet me, I wasn’t particularly impressed by his look. I doubted he would make a significant impact on the big screen. However, the very next day, he brought a dance video. Watching it completely changed my opinion. His energy, dance, and confidence convinced me that he would be the hero of my film. This decision turned out to be one of the most successful in Hindi cinema.”
The success of ‘Ilzaam’ catapulted Govinda to instant fame. Following this, the duo of Pehlaj Nihalani and Govinda delivered several hit films, including ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’ and ‘Aankhen,’ which broke box office records. Notably, ‘Aankhen’ became one of the biggest hits of its time, solidifying Govinda’s status as a superstar.
Pehlaj Nihalani not only provided opportunities to Govinda but also to many other artists. His films were known for their unique blend of entertainment, comedy, and family emotions. He also produced notable films like ‘Andaaz,’ ‘Talash,’ ‘Julie 2,’ and ‘Rangila Raja.’ In addition to filmmaking, he served as the chairperson of the CBFC from 2015 to 2017.
