Madrid, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : Real Madrid Football Club has made a significant decision by not including Ferland Mendy in their Champions League squad, raising questions about his future with the team. Coach José Mourinho’s choice suggests that Mendy may soon depart from the club.
The 31-year-old defender has been sidelined following surgery for a tendon injury. Despite this, Real Madrid has retained injured players Éder Militão and Rodrygo on their roster, even though they are currently unavailable for play. The squad announcement came just before Real Madrid’s European campaign opener against Inter Milan at home.
Mendy has struggled with injuries in recent seasons. During the 2025-2026 campaign, he managed to play only five matches in La Liga and a total of nine across all competitions. His tendon issues prevented a transfer during the summer, but indications are that he could leave in the January transfer window.
Real Madrid’s last signing was 19-year-old midfielder Sergio Martinez from Racing Santander, which diminishes the likelihood of bolstering the defense further. Martinez scored in his first match of the season for Santander, and Real Madrid activated his €3 million release clause, securing him on a long-term contract until June 2030.
Earlier, Mourinho stated that the club’s summer transfer business was essentially concluded. He expressed satisfaction with his current squad, despite not achieving some of the main transfer targets. Speaking before Real Madrid’s late La Liga opener against Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabéu, he clarified that there are no immediate plans to add more players.
Mourinho told reporters, “For me, the team is finalized, but the market is still open. You never know when a player might say, ‘I’ve been benched twice, and I want to leave.’ Theoretically, there will be no more deals, but anything can happen. In my mind, the team is final, and I have not requested anyone else. I am very happy with my current players.”
