Born on March 18, 1957, in Mumbai, Ratna hails from a family deeply connected to the arts. Her mother, Dina Pathak, was a renowned actress in Hindi cinema. Despite growing up in an artistic environment, Ratna initially aspired to become a pilot or air hostess. Over time, her interests shifted towards theater, marking the beginning of her acting journey.
During her theater days, she met the acclaimed actor Naseeruddin Shah. Their friendship gradually blossomed into love. When Ratna disclosed their relationship to her family, her father opposed it. They came from different religious backgrounds and had a 13-year age difference, yet their bond remained strong. After their marriage, Ratna gave birth to two sons, Imad Shah and Vivaan Shah.
Discussing her career, Ratna made her film debut in 1983 with “Mandi.” She gained recognition for her roles in films like “Mirch Masala.” Her talent extended beyond films, as she also achieved significant success in television. Her character, Maya Sarabhai, in “Sarabhai vs Sarabhai,” became a household favorite.
Throughout her career, she has appeared in several notable films, including “Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na,” “Golmaal 3,” “Khoobsurat,” “Kapoor & Sons,” “Lipstick Under My Burkha,” and “Thappad.” Her role in “Lipstick Under My Burkha” received critical acclaim, earning her a nomination for a Filmfare Award.
