New Delhi, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : Actor Rajpal Yadav, who is facing charges in seven check bounce cases, has received a temporary reprieve from the Supreme Court. The court has granted him a final two-week period to arrange for a payment of ₹2 crore.
During the hearing, Yadav’s lawyer argued that sending the actor back to jail would not be beneficial at this time. The Supreme Court agreed to provide a two-week extension, stipulating that Yadav must deposit a demand draft of at least ₹2 crore. The court made it clear that this is the last opportunity for the actor to fulfill this requirement.
Additionally, the Supreme Court has instructed Yadav to surrender his passport. The court expressed concerns regarding Yadav’s past behavior, questioning how he could be trusted given his history.
The judges acknowledged Yadav’s talent in acting, expressing hope that he would not disappoint in court. Yadav participated in the hearing via an online connection. The next hearing is scheduled for October 5.
This legal matter stems from a loan of ₹5 crore that Yadav took from Murli Projects Private Limited in 2010 to finance his film “Ata Pata Lappa.” Released in 2012, the film failed to perform well at the box office, making it difficult for Yadav to repay the loan. Over time, interest and additional charges accumulated, escalating the dispute to nearly ₹9 crore.
The situation escalated when the checks issued for loan repayment bounced, leading to legal action. In 2018, a magistrate court found Yadav and his wife, Radha Yadav, guilty. The case eventually reached the Delhi High Court, which upheld the sentences of three months in jail for each of the seven cases, and ordered the return of the funds to the complainants.
