Political Landscape of Lalitpur: BJPs Stronghold in Upcoming Uttar Pradesh Elections

Lalitpur, a historic district in Uttar Pradesh, remains a BJP stronghold ahead of the 2027 elections, with rich cultural significance.

Lalitpur, October 31 (Daily Kiran) : Lalitpur, located in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh, is notable not just for its geography but also for its political and historical significance. Surrounded almost entirely by Madhya Pradesh, it borders Tikamgarh to the east, Sagar to the south, and Ashoknagar-Shivpuri to the west. The district derives its name from its headquarters, the city of Lalitpur.

The district comprises two assembly constituencies: Lalitpur and Mahrauni, both currently held by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Lalitpur assembly seat is a general constituency, represented by Ramratan Kushwaha, who won the seat in the 2022 assembly elections on a BJP ticket.

The Mahrauni assembly seat is reserved for Scheduled Castes and is represented by Manohar Lal Panth, also known as Mannu Kori. He serves as a minister of state in the state government and secured his position for the second consecutive term in 2022, also under the BJP banner. This constituency falls within the Jhansi Lok Sabha constituency.

Lalitpur boasts an ancient history, referenced in some of the oldest texts, including the Yajurveda, Vishnu Purana, and Varaha Purana, believed to be around 5,000 years old. It is also mentioned in the epic tales of the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Legend has it that King Sumer Singh founded the city of Lalitpur and named it after his wife, Lalita. This region was once under the control of the Gond kings. In the early 16th century, the Bundelas, led by Rudra Pratap, conquered it from the Gonds, and it later became part of the Bundela state of Chanderi.

Originally part of the Chanderi state established by the Bundela Rajputs in the 17th century, Lalitpur came under Maratha rule in the 18th century. In 1811, Daulat Rao Scindia of Gwalior seized Chanderi. By 1812, it became the headquarters for Colonel Baptist, appointed by Scindia to manage the region.

In 1844, the former state of Chanderi was handed over to the British, establishing Lalitpur as the district headquarters. The British lost control during the 1857 uprising but regained it by the end of 1858. In 1861, parts of the region, including Chanderi, were returned to Gwalior, while the remaining area was designated as Lalitpur district.

In 1891, Lalitpur was merged with Jhansi district, becoming part of the Allahabad division. For better administrative efficiency and development, Lalitpur was re-established as a separate district on March 1, 1974, incorporating the Lalitpur and Mahrauni tehsils.

Today, Lalitpur holds a significant position in Bundelkhand’s political arena, showcasing a blend of history, culture, and politics.
