Rajasthan Assembly Monsoon Session Set to Begin Amidst Political Tensions

Jaipur, August 19: The Rajasthan Assembly’s monsoon session is scheduled to commence on August 20. Ahead of the session, tensions have escalated between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress regarding the duration of the assembly and public interest issues. Congress is demanding that the assembly proceedings last between 20 to 25 days, while the government has indicated that the session may only continue until August 25.

During a multi-party meeting chaired by Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani on Tuesday, differences emerged between both parties regarding the issues to be raised during the session and its duration.

Leader of the Opposition, Tikaram Julie, insisted that the assembly should run for 20 to 25 days to allow for comprehensive discussions on significant public interest matters concerning the state. He called for detailed discussions on issues affecting students, youth, women, employees, laborers, and Dalits, as well as the state of schools.

Julie accused the BJP government of evading discussions on public issues. He emphasized that the assembly session should not merely be a formality and that the opposition should be given ample time to raise public concerns.

He opposed any attempts to shorten the session, citing the upcoming elections. Julie alleged that government ministers are unable to respond to opposition queries, which is why they prefer a shorter session.

On the issue of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Julie criticized the government, expressing concerns that it might introduce a bill related to UCC and subsequently blame the opposition for obstructing it, leading to an early conclusion of the session. He made it clear that Congress wants the assembly to last for 20 to 25 days.

In response, the government’s chief whip, Jogeshwar Garg, dismissed the opposition’s allegations, stating that the government is ready to discuss all issues. He noted that the multi-party meeting addressed the potential workings of the assembly and the opposition’s demands. The final duration of the session will be decided jointly by the Assembly Speaker and the government. However, Garg hinted that the assembly session may conclude by August 25, citing the upcoming elections and the usual duration of such sessions.

Garg countered Congress’s claims, urging the opposition to review its own record before accusing the government. He called on the opposition to fully participate in the assembly proceedings rather than “run away” from them.

Meanwhile, the alleged embezzlement of funds for the Ram Temple could also spark uproar in the assembly. The opposition has demanded a discussion on this matter, to which Jogeshwar Garg responded that the government is prepared to address the issue and answer the opposition’s questions.

The session is expected to see the government face opposition queries on various topics, including student issues, unemployment, women’s rights, and Dalit concerns, along with other governance-related matters. The proposal for UCC and allegations of irregularities in Ram Temple funding could further escalate political confrontations in the assembly.

Currently, Congress is firm on its demand for a 20 to 25-day session, while the government signals a conclusion by August 25. Thus, the duration of the session could become the first major political battle between the ruling party and the opposition in the assembly.

As the session begins on August 20, Congress is preparing to challenge the government on public interest issues, while the BJP claims it is ready to respond to every question posed by the opposition. The Rajasthan Assembly’s monsoon session is likely to be tumultuous.
