New Delhi, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : The Prime Minister Housing Scheme Urban 2.0 is approaching a significant milestone, with the government announcing that nearly 2 million homes have been approved under the initiative. As of now, approximately 1.877 million homes have received approval, providing affordable, secure, and permanent housing for urban poor families.
An official statement highlighted that these approvals mark a crucial step towards ensuring “Housing for All,” enabling more urban families to become homeowners and build a better future. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has granted approvals for a total of 1.877 million homes, accelerating the implementation of this scheme and advancing the goal of affordable housing in urban areas.
Of the homes approved under PMAY-U 2.0, around 1.719 million (92 percent) have been allocated to women. Satendra Singh, Secretary of the Urban Development Department at MoHUA, emphasized the need for timely and effective implementation and monitoring of the scheme to ensure that all eligible beneficiaries can access its benefits.
He urged the immediate identification of any obstacles and suggested engaging with states and union territories to resolve them. The aim of PMAY-U 2.0 is to assist eligible Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Low-Income Groups (LIG), and Middle-Income Groups (MIG) families in urban areas to build their homes through various verticals of the scheme.
According to the government, beneficiaries can construct their permanent homes, purchase homes from projects developed under the scheme, benefit from affordable rental housing, or take advantage of interest subsidies on eligible home loans. This array of housing options caters to their needs, eligibility, and financial circumstances.
PMAY-U 2.0 builds on the continuous progress made under PMAY-U. Overall, more than 12.5 million homes have been approved under both PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0, with over 10 million homes already constructed and handed over to beneficiaries.
To ensure inclusivity and extend the scheme’s benefits to vulnerable sections of society, 180,000 homes have been allocated to the elderly. Additionally, approximately 325,000 homes have been approved for Scheduled Caste beneficiaries, 102,000 for Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries, and 822,000 for Other Backward Classes.
