New Delhi, August 14: Political tensions have escalated following opposition leader Rahul Gandhi‘s personal remarks about India’s foreign policy and Prime Minister Modi. In response, the Foreign Ministry emphasized the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic relations with Italy.
During a weekly media briefing, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed questions regarding Gandhi’s humorous comments, stating, “We have strong ties with Italy. Our relationship has grown and improved in various ways over recent years. It is essential that we strengthen bilateral relations with mutual respect and understanding.”
Gandhi made his remarks during an event in New Delhi on Thursday, where he jokingly mocked Prime Minister Modi for publicly embracing foreign leaders, alongside Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit. He also criticized India’s foreign policy.
Following this, Dikshit made comments regarding Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni that were condemned by critics as disrespectful and inappropriate. Leaders from various political parties have denounced his remarks as beneath the dignity of political discourse.
Critics argue that while the opposition has every right to challenge the central government’s diplomatic strategies and international relations, such critiques should be based on facts, policies, and outcomes rather than superficial gestures.
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj harshly criticized Gandhi, suggesting he appears more like a failed stand-up comedian than an opposition leader. She accused him of making “locker-room talk and crude gestures,” asserting that the nation expects better behavior from its opposition leaders.
Additionally, BJP leader Shehzad Poonawala questioned how low political debates could sink, stating that while disagreement with PM Modi is entirely valid, dragging a foreign female leader into the discussion is neither wise nor statesmanlike.
Analysts noted, “A constructive opposition should hold the government accountable for unemployment, economic policies, national security, diplomacy, and governance. Rahul Gandhi has the constitutional right to do just that.”
