Rahul Gandhi Questions Timing of Womens Reservation Bill Amid Ongoing Census

New Delhi, April 15: Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, launched a scathing attack on the central government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday. He alleged that the government is using the 2011 census to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill, despite the ongoing caste-based census in the country.

In a post on the social media platform X, Gandhi stated that the current proposal has nothing to do with women’s reservation. He described it as an attempt to seize power through arbitrary redistricting and manipulation of electoral boundaries.

This statement comes just a day before the extended budget session of Parliament is set to begin. During this session, discussions are expected on amendments to the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023,’ which aims to provide one-third reservation for women, as well as a proposed delimitation bill.

Gandhi emphasized that the Congress party firmly supports women’s reservation, noting that the bill was passed unanimously in Parliament in 2023.

Accompanying his post was a video message where he highlighted the issue’s significance, particularly for marginalized groups, Dalits, tribal communities, and women. The opposition leader accused the government of deceiving the public.

In the video, he asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not want the decision on women’s reservation to be based on the caste census, the new census, or the OBC census. Instead, he prefers to rely on the 2011 census, which does not account for the number of backward classes.

Gandhi further alleged that the participation of backward classes is being undermined, accusing the BJP of not wanting these communities to receive representation based on their actual population.
