Amaravati, April 18: Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and president of the YSR Congress Party, has challenged the opposition parties that opposed the amendment to the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament. He questioned what they have achieved by their actions.
After the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 failed to secure a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, Reddy took to social media to address the parties that voted against it.
He expressed concern that if the delimitation is based on the 2026 census, the situation for the southern states could worsen. He stated, “Opposition parties should seriously ask themselves; what have they achieved? The reality is that seats for the south will decrease, and the Women’s Reservation Bill has been stalled! Neither the south has received justice nor have women! If the 2026 census comes, the situation for the south will be even worse; they will face even harsher penalties for family planning.”
Y.S. Sharmila Reddy, president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, responded by stating that the BJP’s deceptive tactics under the guise of women’s reservation have failed.
She accused the BJP of attempting to impose illegal laws by using women’s issues as a shield. She posted, “The conspiracies devised by the BJP to undermine federalism under the pretext of empowerment have proven futile. The ‘Indi’ alliance’s just struggle has triumphed over NDA’s injustices. This is a victory for democracy and the people of India. It marks the end of the BJP’s politically malicious agenda. This is a strong slap in the face of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has engaged in petty politics in the name of women, and also for the BJP, known for its religious extremism.”
The Congress leader clarified that what fell was merely a “thoughtless and directionless” delimitation bill, not the Women’s Reservation Bill itself.
She emphasized that the opposition has never opposed the Women’s Reservation Bill. “What was presented in the name of ‘Nari’ (women) was nothing but the delimitation bill. What was defeated today was specifically a bill to redefine constituency boundaries. The conspiracy that the opposition successfully thwarted was merely an attempt to alter the Constitution.”
She further stated, “The Women’s Reservation Bill was actually passed in 2023. Instead of continuing to throw mud at the opposition, the BJP should now implement the 2023 Women’s Reservation Bill immediately. The BJP must prove once and for all that it is genuinely serious about women’s issues. A 33% reservation should be immediately implemented across all 543 parliamentary seats.”
