IPL 2026: What’s Going Wrong for Mumbai Indians? Five Reasons Behind Their Losing Streak

Mumbai, April 18: The start of IPL 2026 has not gone as expected for the Mumbai Indians (MI). Under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya, the team has played five matches so far, losing four of them. Despite having star players, MI is struggling significantly this season. Here are five reasons why Mumbai Indians are unable to break their losing streak.

First, the poor form of experienced batsman Suryakumar Yadav has raised concerns. In five matches, Suryakumar has managed only 106 runs. He is expected to stabilize MI’s innings during the middle overs. Last season, he scored 717 runs in 16 matches, helping the team reach the second qualifier. His inability to score runs is heavily impacting Mumbai Indians.

Second, captain Hardik Pandya has not lived up to expectations. Along with Suryakumar, Hardik has also struggled to make an impact with both bat and ball this season. When the top order fails, MI relies on Hardik for a strong performance. However, he has scored just 81 runs at an average of 27 in four matches. As a finisher, he has not shown the rhythm he is known for. In bowling, he has taken seven wickets in five matches but has an economy rate of 9.17.

Third, Tilak Varma has not been effective. He is supposed to provide balance to MI’s batting order but has struggled to score runs in IPL 2026. With a strike rate of 134, he has only managed 43 runs in five matches. Changes in the batting order have not worked for him this season.

Fourth, Jasprit Bumrah is yet to take a wicket in IPL 2026. His failure to claim wickets is proving costly for MI. Particularly in the final overs, Bumrah’s wickets have historically helped MI prevent opposing teams from posting high scores. Without his wickets, MI has struggled to apply pressure on the batting side. Other bowlers like Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, and Shardul Thakur have also failed to make a significant impact.

Lastly, MI is clearly missing a good spinner. Allah Gajnafar has struggled to contain runs, while Mitchell Santner has failed to take wickets in the middle overs. Gajnafar has taken only four wickets in three matches, with an economy rate of 10.71, while Santner has managed just two wickets in two matches.

In summary, these factors are contributing to the Mumbai Indians’ disappointing performance in IPL 2026.
