Mumbai, April 18: The Lok Sabha failed to pass the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ (Women’s Reservation Bill), prompting strong reactions from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who called the situation unfortunate.
CM Fadnavis expressed his disappointment on social media platform X, stating it was deeply shameful. He accused the opposition of hypocrisy, highlighting that they missed a historic opportunity to support women’s empowerment. He criticized their approach, saying that for them, empowerment is limited to speeches and slogans. He emphasized that their opposition to the bill revealed whose interests they truly serve.
Fadnavis added that women in India are watching and will not forget this moment. He reaffirmed that their commitment to women’s empowerment goes beyond words. Starting tomorrow, they will take to the streets to demand every right, justice, and respect for women.
In a media interaction in Kolkata, he described the day as a dark one for democracy. He noted that Prime Minister Modi had ensured women’s representation in democracy, but the opposition thwarted its passage. This failure to amend the Constitution exposed the anti-women stance of the opposition.
He expressed surprise at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s opposition, suggesting that women in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal would respond. The fight for women’s rights will continue until women receive reservation. He also took a jab at Rahul Gandhi, suggesting that the opposition was celebrating their denial of rights.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde echoed these sentiments, calling the rejection of the Women’s Reservation Bill extremely unfortunate. He accused the Congress and the INDIA alliance of adopting an anti-women stance to prevent mothers and sisters from marginalized communities from entering Parliament. The Shiv Sena vehemently opposes this.
Shinde further remarked that Prime Minister Modi made a historic effort to honor women’s strength, but the opposition’s biases against women were evident today. He warned that this would be remembered as a dark day in the nation’s history, and the country would soon witness the fierce resolve of women against their opponents.
MP Milind Deora also criticized the opposition, stating that despite clear assurances from Prime Minister Modi, they chose to oppose a historic constitutional amendment. This amendment aimed to ensure 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies until 2029. He deemed their actions shameful.
