New Delhi, February 9: In a recent session of the Lok Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi responded sharply to Speaker Om Birla’s remarks regarding Prime Minister Modi. Gandhi asserted that the Prime Minister’s absence is not due to any member’s actions, but rather out of fear of his own statements.
During a media interaction in New Delhi, Gandhi dismissed claims that opposition MPs threatened Prime Minister Modi. “The truth is clear. The Prime Minister is afraid to come to the House, not because of the members, but because of my words. He is still scared because he cannot face the truth,” he stated. He emphasized that there is no question of attacking the Prime Minister, urging him to have the courage to attend sessions. “If anyone claims they will attack the Prime Minister, please file an FIR immediately and arrest that person. Why aren’t you doing that?” he questioned.
Gandhi elaborated that the controversy began a few days ago with the release of Manoj Mukund Naravane’s book. He claimed the government was trying to prevent him from discussing it, leading to multiple interruptions during his speeches. “They first said I couldn’t reference a book. When I clarified I was citing a magazine, they said I couldn’t reference that either. The Defence Minister falsely claimed the book wasn’t published, but it has been, and we have a copy,” he asserted.
He highlighted a significant issue where the opposition leader and the entire opposition were not allowed to speak during the President’s address. He pointed out that a BJP MP quoted several books and made derogatory remarks without facing any consequences. “We dislike that they can say whatever they want, while the opposition is silenced,” he remarked. He also raised concerns about the suspension of opposition members.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra added that the Speaker is under immense pressure to make statements, which she believes is inappropriate. “There are 11 women MPs from Congress, including myself. All are serious politicians, and the Speaker has disrespected them. The government has pressured the Speaker to say such things. The Prime Minister himself has not attended the House, which is why the Speaker is being compelled to clarify,” she stated.
