Kolkata, March 12: Former senior officer of the Intelligence Bureau and ex-Governor of Tamil Nadu, R.N. Ravi, will be sworn in as the new Governor of West Bengal today.
Ravi arrived in Kolkata late Wednesday evening. His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 11:30 AM at Lok Bhavan. The Chief Justice of the Kolkata High Court, Sujoy Paul, will administer the oath.
The ceremony will be attended by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari.
Ravi is the second super-cop from the Intelligence Bureau to be appointed as the Governor of West Bengal in the last fifteen years. In 2011, former IB chief and National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan was sworn in as Governor.
Political experts suggest that Ravi’s appointment may coincide with the upcoming assembly elections in the state.
Prior to Ravi’s appointment, his predecessor, C.V. Anand Bose, unexpectedly resigned on the evening of March 5, causing a stir in the state’s political circles.
The Trinamool Congress attributed Bose’s sudden resignation to pressure from the central government. However, Bose dismissed these speculations, stating that his resignation was a personal decision.
Following Bose’s resignation, Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock and accused the Union Home Ministry of announcing Ravi’s appointment without consulting her.
The Chief Minister stated, “The Union Home Minister only informed me that R.N. Ravi is being appointed as the Governor of West Bengal. No consultation was held with me as per established tradition.”
Mamata emphasized that such actions undermine the spirit of the Indian Constitution and threaten the foundation of the country’s federal structure.
