Chennai, August 23: K. Krishnasamy, founder of the Puthia Tamizhagam (PT), questioned why Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay did not provide a detailed statement in the assembly regarding his speech at the Southern Zonal Council meeting held last week.
Krishnasamy also criticized comments made by Tamil Nadu ministers. He alleged that these remarks were more focused on attracting media attention and social media engagement rather than addressing issues raised by the opposition.
In a statement, he expressed that ministers are expected to respond constructively to grant requests for their departments and pressing issues that arise daily. Instead, he claimed that many of their responses were irrelevant and aimed at diverting attention from the questions. He likened such responses to answering someone asking for directions to Pattukottai by telling them the price of coconuts.
He noted that while heated debates during live broadcasts may generate social media content, they do not benefit the public.
Krishnasamy further asserted that during attempts to control the proceedings of the house, the Speaker appeared caught between right and wrong. He stated that after reaching millions of viewers through live broadcasts, removing ministers’ objectionable or excessive comments from the assembly records serves little purpose. He compared this process to “locking the stable door after the horse has bolted,” questioning who ultimately benefits from it.
Regarding the Southern Zonal Council meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah near Chennai, Krishnasamy remarked that it took place without sufficient prior public information at a time when the Cauvery water-sharing dispute was escalating.
He demanded clarity on the stance taken by Vijay during the meeting on significant inter-state issues affecting Tamil Nadu. These include Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu reservoir, the sharing of Cauvery water, Kerala’s Mullaperiyar dam, demands to restore Tamil Nadu’s water levels to 152 feet, and disputes with Andhra Pradesh regarding the Palar River.
Krishnasamy insisted that the Chief Minister should have presented a comprehensive report in the assembly detailing Tamil Nadu’s position, the arguments made at the conference, and its outcomes. He expressed surprise that opposition parties failed to raise questions on this matter and called for the government to provide transparent clarification without further delay.
