Kanyakumari, August 23: Police have launched a manhunt for a gang accused of attacking a revenue officer and threatening his life. This incident occurred when officials attempted to seize 17 tons of ration rice stored in a warehouse within the Kerala border. Authorities reported the details on Sunday.
The event unfolded when a flying squad, led by Tehsildar Bharti, inspected vehicles in Kaliyakkavilai, Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu. During the operation, officers signaled a mini-truck to stop for inspection, but the driver allegedly ignored their orders and fled the scene.
Suspicious of illegal transportation of ration rice, the flying squad pursued the vehicle towards the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border. The mini-truck entered a rice warehouse located in Inchivila, Kerala.
As officials followed the vehicle and attempted to inspect the warehouse, a group present at the site reportedly confronted the team and attacked Revenue Inspector Dinesh. According to available information, the assailants threatened the officer’s life before fleeing the scene.
Despite the altercation, officials continued their operation. Police from both Tamil Nadu and Kerala participated in a coordinated raid on the warehouse. During the search, authorities discovered approximately 17 tons of ration rice stored on the premises. The entire stock was confiscated as part of the operation.
An investigation has now commenced to determine how the rice reached the warehouse and whether it was intended for illegal sale or smuggling across state lines. Identifying the owner of the seized shipment and its intended destination is also likely to be part of the investigation.
Police have initiated efforts to identify and locate the members of the group that allegedly attacked Dinesh and obstructed the inspection. The suspects fled before they could be apprehended, and searches are ongoing in potential hiding spots.
This incident has once again highlighted the suspected illegal movement of subsidized ration rice from border areas.
