CPI(M) Leaders Attacked in Tamil Nadu; Immediate Arrests Demanded

Ulundurpet, August 23: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has strongly condemned the alleged attack on four of its senior leaders in Tamil Nadu‘s Kallakurichi district, demanding the immediate arrest of all involved.

In a statement, CPI(M) Tamil Nadu State Secretary P. Shanmugam reported that a group of eight individuals attacked District Secretary D.M. Jaishankar, former District Secretary D. Ezhumalai, District Committee member D.S. Mohan, and their driver on the night of August 21.

The incident occurred as the leaders were finalizing preparations for a protest in Ulundurpet. According to the party, they were passing through Kiliyaur village and had parked their vehicle when a group from Vadamangalam village obstructed them. The attackers allegedly harassed the leaders and made derogatory remarks against CPI(M).

They damaged the party flag and broke the car windows before assaulting those inside. The party described the incident as a premeditated and life-threatening attack.

CPI(M) claimed that this violence was linked to their campaign addressing alleged irregularities in the implementation of the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme in Vadamangalam. The party accused a former village council president of collecting money from residents under the promise of constructing 22 houses but failing to deliver. They organized protests demanding justice and the return of the residents’ money.

The statement noted that CPI(M) workers were also campaigning on various local issues affecting the community. Shanmugam stated that the former council president was displeased with the party’s intervention. He alleged that the group of eight, including two sons of the former president, planned and executed the attack in retaliation against CPI(M) activities.

A complaint has been filed at the Kalmarudhur police station. The injured leaders received treatment at a hospital and have since returned home. However, the party expressed concern that only one person has been arrested so far.

CPI(M)’s state executive committee has urged Tamil Nadu police to promptly arrest all accused, including the two sons of the former council president. The party also called for strict legal measures against those responsible for targeting leaders campaigning in support of local residents.
