
New Delhi, August 23: Indian Grandmaster Pranesh M. has won the prestigious Kanizsa Open 2026 held in Hungary’s Nagykanizsa. After an exciting ninth round, Pranesh secured the top position in the tournament.
This event is considered one of the toughest and most competitive open tournaments in Central Europe, and Pranesh’s performance was outstanding. On the final day, he delivered a brilliant display against Vadim Petrovsky, finishing with 7 points out of 9 and winning in the tiebreaker. The sports community is showering congratulations on the new champion for this remarkable victory.
Pranesh’s win is yet another excellent example of India’s growing dominance in international chess. Indian talent has been shining on the global stage, and Hungary continues to be a hub of success for Indian chess.
Born on August 26, 2006, in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, Munirethinam Pranesh became India’s 79th Grandmaster in January 2023 after winning the Rilton Cup in Stockholm. He earned the title of International Master and his first GM norm at the Delhi GM Open in 2020. In 2025, he won the Challengers section at the Chennai Grandmasters.
Coming from a humble background, Pranesh’s father, Munirethiyam, works at a clothing store, while his mother, Manjula, is an Anganwadi worker. She was also Pranesh’s first coach, introducing him to chess and teaching him its intricacies.
Recognizing Pranesh’s talent in chess, his parents enrolled him in a chess academy. His older brother, Dineshrajan, is also a chess player and has played a significant role in Pranesh’s training.
