New Delhi, February 23: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated on Monday that to achieve India’s long-term economic goals, quality must be the cornerstone of manufacturing and export systems.
Addressing the first National Quality Conference, organized virtually by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and the Quality Council of India (QCI), Minister Goyal emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Zero Defect, Zero Effect’ should guide India’s development journey during the Amrit Kaal and help realize the dream of a ‘Developed India 2047.’
He remarked, “India cannot progress merely as a consumer nation. The country must become a global manufacturer of high-quality products and services. ‘Brand India’ should symbolize reliability, trust, and excellence.”
The minister highlighted that to achieve the ambitious export target of $2 trillion in the next six to seven years—comprising $1 trillion in goods and $1 trillion in services—Indian products must meet global standards.
Goyal noted that in the past three to three and a half years, India has signed nine Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with 38 developed countries, covering nearly two-thirds of global GDP and trade.
He mentioned that these agreements open new opportunities in sectors like textiles, leather, footwear, and pharmaceuticals. However, to fully capitalize on these markets, Indian companies must consistently maintain high quality.
Additionally, he pointed out that despite having potential in labor-intensive sectors, India’s share in global trade remains limited.
Goyal urged the industry to leverage better market access and ensure that the quality of products sold in India matches that of exported goods.
He noted that there was a time when consumers demanded ‘export quality’ products. Now, the country must eliminate the dual quality system and adopt uniform standards for both domestic and international markets.
