Balrampur, May 8: Purnima Basin’s journey in Balrampur district, Chhattisgarh, has become an inspiration for rural women. There was a time when meeting her family’s daily needs was a significant challenge.
Purnima owned farmland and worked hard, but her income was insufficient to support her household. However, her situation has dramatically changed. Today, Purnima is known as ‘Lakhpati Didi,’ and her success has become a beacon of hope for other women in her village.
The real transformation in Purnima’s life began when she joined a Self-Help Group (SHG). Through this group, she accessed bank linkages and loans via the CIF, which paved the way for her dreams. She decided to move beyond traditional farming and adopted organic farming, specifically cultivating the fragrant Jiraphool rice, which is now in high demand in the market.
Purnima stated that she utilized the loan wisely. Since starting organic farming, her income has steadily increased, and she now earns in the millions. Thanks to this income, she can provide her children with quality education, significantly improving her family’s financial situation. Purnima expressed her gratitude to the Chief Minister, stating that government support and initiatives have enabled her to become ‘Lakhpati Didi.’
Recently, Purnima met with the Chief Minister, where she shared her inspiring journey from struggle to success. The Chief Minister praised her efforts, highlighting them as a strong example of women’s growing participation and self-reliance in the rural economy.
Purnima Basin is not the only woman who has carved out a new identity through hard work. Many women’s groups in Balrampur are rapidly advancing towards self-sufficiency. Groups like the Bariyon Ka Gandhi, the Santra group from Durgapur, and the Durga group are expanding their businesses through handicrafts and food products. With the help of government schemes and bank linkages, these women are not limited to local markets but are also reaching larger markets.
These stories from Balrampur depict a changing rural India, where women are forging new identities through hard work, confidence, and the right opportunities. What began in the fields is now giving wings to dreams.
