Chandigarh, August 28: Political activities surrounding the student elections at Punjab University are intensifying. Jaskaran Bhullar, a leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), has leveled serious accusations against the student wing of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for attempting to influence the elections and pressuring students. He stated that ABVP is contesting the elections based on student issues, while AAP is allegedly using political influence.
Bhullar noted that AAP’s student wing has been active at Punjab University since 2022. Initially named CYSS, it was later rebranded as ASAP. He claimed that AAP MP from Sangrur, Meet Hayer, and the MLA from Bhagapurana have been officially appointed as the in-charge for the student elections, showcasing direct political interference in student politics.
He emphasized that typically, no party MP or MLA is assigned such responsibilities in student organization elections. Even the NSUI does not assign its MPs or MLAs in this manner. AAP is reportedly trying to sway the elections through its political officials.
Bhullar dismissed allegations against ABVP, which claimed that student leaders were contacted by gangsters, as completely baseless. He asserted that no such actions are being taken by their organization. ABVP stands with the students and has been raising issues related to student welfare for the past year. He accused AAP of pressuring students to vote for a specific student organization through calls from MLAs, chairpersons, and panchayat members.
He alleged that Meet Hayer held a meeting with around 60 PhD scholars at Mullanpur Stadium, where pressure was exerted on them, stating that employment opportunities would only be available if they supported the relevant student organization in the elections. Supporters of ABVP are reportedly being threatened, and derogatory language has been used against students associated with the organization, with threats of mistreatment for supporting ABVP.
Bhullar mentioned that they are preparing to file a complaint regarding these issues and will escalate the matter to the appropriate authorities.
