Patna, August 28: Union Minister and National President of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Chirag Paswan, has expressed concern over the misunderstanding surrounding the reservation system for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). In an interview with a news agency, he stated that those discussing the assessment of reservations do not truly comprehend the essence of this system, particularly regarding SC/ST reservations.
Paswan emphasized, “Talking about the assessment of reservations means excluding people from the system and narrowing its scope. The Constitution provides for reservations at every level. When we discuss reservations for SC and ST communities, the basis cannot be economic; it is a fight for social justice.”
He further elaborated on the historical context of these communities, stating, “Who are these individuals from the Scheduled Castes? They are those who have been marginalized by the Constitution, who faced untouchability, and were kept away from villages. It was considered sinful even to look at them. The Scheduled Tribes have distinct characteristics in terms of attire, lifestyle, and language.”
Paswan pointed out that the basis for granting reservations to these two communities has been discrimination. He questioned how economic factors could be integrated into a system rooted in social injustice.
He challenged the public by asking, “Is there no discrimination today? Incidents involving Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and others are happening. They are united now, but this community struggles significantly. Imagine if they were to split into smaller factions; who would listen to them then? As a united front, they have a voice.”
Regarding the ‘Students’ Voice’ program led by opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, Paswan remarked, “It is commendable that students’ voices are being heard. However, my concern is that this platform should not be misused for political purposes. If you genuinely want to represent students, focus on their issues and work towards solutions rather than just creating noise.”
He also expressed his views on the need for dialogue with the Chief Minister regarding student concerns, stating that his meetings aimed solely at finding solutions.
Additionally, Paswan commented on the impact of floods in Nepal and their repercussions on Bihar. He expressed sorrow over the tragedy occurring around the Raksha Bandhan festival, extending condolences to those who lost loved ones.
He assured that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance, every possible effort is being made to provide assistance to Nepal. A helpline for Indians affected by the disaster has been established, and he hopes for a swift return to normalcy in the region.
