Meghalayas Chief Minister Advocates for Sustainable Mining Practices

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma emphasizes sustainable mining in Meghalaya, highlighting its economic benefits and community development.

Shillong, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : Chief Minister Conrad Sangma of Meghalaya called for a shift towards scientific and sustainable mining practices during a recent ceremony in Shillong. He emphasized that mineral wealth should provide long-term economic opportunities and improve living standards for local communities. This appeal coincided with the tenth anniversary of the District Mineral Foundation (DMF).

Sangma highlighted the crucial role of mining in Meghalaya’s economy, generating revenue and providing livelihoods for thousands. He stressed the need for mining practices to evolve towards safer and more sustainable methods, taking into account local conditions and the traditional system of community land ownership.

Reflecting on the DMF’s achievements over the past decade, the Chief Minister noted that the foundation has raised ₹1.81 billion and approved 923 projects, with 542 already completed. These completed initiatives include essential services such as classrooms, healthcare facilities, drinking water supply networks, and footbridges designed to withstand monsoon conditions.

The projects also focus on environmental restoration through water conservation structures and afforestation in mining areas. Sangma indicated that the focus should now shift from basic infrastructure to developing assets that generate sustainable income and strengthen local economies.

He suggested that investments in tourism, food processing, and local enterprises could help revitalize Meghalaya’s economy, ensuring that the benefits of mineral resources support communities in the long term. The Chief Minister urged district administrations to ensure effective use of available DMF funds and to complete ongoing projects without unnecessary delays. He called for close coordination between district officials and local communities to maximize the impact of development initiatives funded by the foundation.
