Chandigarh, August 23: Punjab’s Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, announced on Sunday that the Counter Intelligence (CI) unit in Amritsar has dismantled an illegal arms trafficking network. Two individuals have been arrested, and authorities recovered 10 modern pistols, magazines, and 10 cartridges from their possession.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Gurpreet Singh and another individual with the same name, both residents of the village of Haveliyaan in Tarn Taran. The seized weapons include nine 9mm pistols and one .30 bore pistol. In addition to the firearms, police teams confiscated their motorcycle, which was used for transporting the arms.
DGP Yadav revealed that initial investigations indicated the suspects were in contact with a handler based abroad and were smuggling arms across the border to supply others in Punjab.
During the operation, police received information that the two suspects had obtained a large shipment of weapons via drone near the border fence in the Haveliyaan area, following instructions from their handler. They were supposed to deliver this shipment to another party.
The police swiftly acted and apprehended both suspects near Khasa village on the Amritsar-Attari road, recovering the 10 modern pistols along with magazines and cartridges.
DGP Yadav stated that investigations are ongoing to uncover all connections related to this case, identify other associates, and expose the larger cross-border trafficking network. A case has been registered under various sections of the Arms Act and the Indian Penal Code at the State Special Operations Cell police station in Amritsar on August 22.
