Chandigarh, August 23: The Punjab Police has achieved a significant victory against arms trafficking. The Counter Intelligence team from Amritsar has dismantled a major network involved in the illegal arms trade, resulting in the arrest of two suspects.
The official ‘X’ handle of Punjab’s DGP shared details about the operation. The post revealed that the team seized 10 modern pistols, magazines, and 10 live 9MM cartridges from the accused.
Initial investigations indicate that the arrested individuals were in contact with a handler based abroad. They were allegedly importing illegal shipments of weapons across the border and supplying them to various individuals in Punjab. This network is believed to be part of a larger module that sends arms via drones from Pakistan and then distributes them within the state.
The police have filed an FIR at the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) police station in Amritsar and have commenced further investigations. Authorities are now probing all links in the supply chain to identify other associates connected to this network and to uncover the entire cross-border smuggling racket.
Punjab Police has stated its unwavering commitment to dismantling illegal arms networks and ensuring the safety of the state.
In recent months, incidents of cross-border arms and drug trafficking have surged in Punjab. Joint teams from the BSF and Punjab Police are continuously conducting search operations in border areas. Recently, several cases involving shipments of weapons and heroin sent via drones have been intercepted.
According to police officials, handlers based abroad lure Punjab’s youth into this illegal trade. The seized modern pistols are suspected to be used in gangster activities and targeted killings, making the dismantling of this network crucial for security. Interrogation of the arrested suspects is ongoing, and further arrests may follow soon.
