Chandigarh, April 2: The Punjab government has deployed 19,000 Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) to improve access to health services under the Chief Minister Health Scheme (MMSY).
The state government has activated the ASHA worker network to expedite the enrollment process for the scheme. The aim is to strengthen health service access at the grassroots level.
According to an official statement released on Wednesday, over 19,000 ASHA workers and 900 assistants are now managing the registration process across villages in the state.
ASHA workers play a crucial role in increasing the scheme’s outreach. Each worker is assigned to approximately 1,000 residents, covering about 250 families. They are visiting homes, raising awareness about the scheme, and assisting families with registration at service centers and Common Service Centers.
This approach ensures that awareness reaches households directly, especially in rural areas, while guiding families through the enrollment process to facilitate smooth registration and verification without delays or confusion.
The impact of this ongoing grassroots activity is already visible. Thanks to the efforts of ASHA workers, nearly 1 million enrollments have occurred in just the past 20 days, significantly accelerating the inclusion of residents under health coverage across Punjab.
To maintain this momentum, the ASHA worker-led model is supported by a structured incentive system that encourages workers for successful enrollments, ensuring accountability and continuous outreach in their areas.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Balbir Singh stated, “Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has made it clear that no family in Punjab should suffer due to inability to afford treatment. Our ASHA workers are bringing this promise to the doorsteps of people, ensuring every family is aware and able to register. This is not just a plan on paper; it is a guarantee we are delivering directly to each family.”
The reach of the Chief Minister Health Scheme is continuously expanding, with approximately 50,000 residents registering daily and over 3.5 million health cards issued. Districts like Ludhiana, Patiala, and Jalandhar are leading in registrations, showcasing strong participation from both urban and rural areas.
In addition to enrollment, the scheme is delivering excellent health service outcomes. So far, over 200,000 treatments worth ₹300 crores have been provided, including more than 40,000 surgical procedures for conditions such as heart disease, dialysis, orthopedic issues, cancer treatment, and emergency interventions. The Punjab budget for 2026-27 has allocated ₹2,000 crores for the scheme’s expansion.
With ongoing efforts through camps, centers, and door-to-door awareness campaigns, the government continues to encourage residents to register for health cards and avail cashless treatment benefits under the Chief Minister Health Scheme.
