Punjab Assembly Increases Minimum Wage for Workers for the First Time in 14 Years

Chandigarh, May 1: On the occasion of International Labor Day, the Punjab Assembly unanimously approved a 15 percent increase in the minimum wage for workers on Friday. This marks the first such decision in 14 years.

The proposal, presented by Punjab’s Labor Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond, was passed during a special session commemorating ‘Kirti Diwas.’

While introducing the proposal, Minister Sond emphasized that this historic session, held after nearly 69 years, pays tribute to the invaluable contributions of workers, who are considered the backbone of the nation, society, and economy.

He highlighted that every development project and milestone of progress is made possible through the tireless efforts, dedication, and sacrifices of the working class.

Minister Sond underscored the historical significance of May Day, reminding everyone of the sacrifices made by workers during the historic movement at Haymarket Square in Chicago in 1886, which led to the demand for an eight-hour workday.

He further stated that this day symbolizes the ongoing quest for social justice, better working conditions, and labor rights.

The minister also emphasized Punjab’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage, recalling the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev, who advocated for the dignity and importance of labor through the guiding principles of “Kirt karo, Vand chhako, Naam japo” (Work hard, keep God in your heart, and share the fruits of your labor with those in need).

Addressing the current wage structure, Minister Sond informed the assembly that the last revision of the minimum wage base rate in Punjab occurred in 2012. The state government has now decided to provide essential relief to workers.

He noted that while the dearness allowance has been increased periodically, the base rate has remained unchanged, causing significant hardship for a large section of society.

Recognizing the need for timely amendments, the assembly recommended that the state government take decisive steps to increase the minimum wage.

The proposal aims to ensure that workers receive appropriate recognition, fair compensation, and rewards for their invaluable contributions to the state’s development and prosperity.

The passing of this proposal reflects the assembly’s collective commitment to the welfare and upliftment of workers across Punjab.

The Labor Minister also recited a poignant poem by revolutionary Punjabi poet Sant Ram Udasi, highlighting the commendable steps taken by the state government for the benefit of workers.
