Pulses and Legumes: The Key to a Healthy Heart

New Delhi, February 11: Poor lifestyle choices and unhealthy eating habits are increasingly leading young people to suffer from diabetes, thyroid issues, and heart diseases. Stress and work pressure negatively impact both the heart and mind. Each year, the number of deaths caused by heart diseases rises, affecting individuals from children to the elderly. The Indian government continuously runs awareness campaigns to combat these illnesses. However, Ayurveda suggests that the solution to many health problems lies within our kitchens.

According to Ayurveda, stress and the accumulation of toxins in the body are significant contributors to heart diseases. Neglecting dietary habits, consuming packaged foods, eating excessive sugar, experiencing stress, and lack of sleep all invite heart-related issues. Fortunately, simple ingredients found at home can help prevent these diseases, with pulses and legumes being particularly beneficial. Pulses and legumes are essential components of the Indian diet and should be consumed daily, as they help reduce the risk of coronary artery disease.

Additionally, pulses and legumes are rich in soluble fiber, which aids in lowering bad cholesterol levels. Cholesterol is naturally present in the human body, and when dietary cholesterol exceeds a certain limit, it puts pressure on blood vessels. This pressure can hinder the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively, leading to anxiety, breathing difficulties, and adverse effects on heart rate.

Pulses and legumes also have a low glycemic index, which helps regulate diabetes and control blood pressure. The question arises: which types of pulses and legumes are most beneficial? While each type has its unique properties, black-eyed peas, lentils, kidney beans, mung beans, chickpeas, and moth beans are particularly advantageous for those at risk of or suffering from heart diseases.

Incorporating lifestyle changes, such as adding salads, soups, pulses, fiber-rich vegetables, and brown rice to your diet, is essential. Brown rice contains cancer-fighting properties and antioxidants that provide numerous health benefits.
