Protests in Delhi Disrupt Train Services, Thousands Miss Departures

New Delhi, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : In New Delhi, ongoing protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar have caused significant disruptions, impacting thousands of commuters and rail travelers. On Thursday, railway sources reported that around 5,000 passengers missed their trains due to severe traffic congestion resulting from the demonstrations.

Traffic was heavily affected after noon, particularly in and around New Delhi. Major routes experienced long jams, preventing many travelers from reaching the railway stations on time, leading to missed departures.

The situation also impacted some group bookings through IRCTC, forcing several passengers to cancel their journeys. Among those affected were 52 students from IIT Jodhpur, who missed their scheduled train, the Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express.

Avinash Chauhan, a representative from IIT Jodhpur, noted that their group consisted of approximately 56 individuals planning to travel on train number 12424. Unfortunately, due to the severe traffic, they could not arrive at New Delhi Railway Station in time and missed their train.

Additionally, passengers traveling on the Mumbai Rajdhani Express and the Delhi-Varanasi Vande Bharat Express also faced similar issues, unable to reach the station on schedule.

The Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express departs from New Delhi at 4:20 PM and is scheduled to arrive in Dibrugarh two days later at 6:20 AM.

The protests, led by the Congress party and the India alliance, have been ongoing for three days, focusing on alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Review (SIR) process of the Election Commission. Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, gathered at Rajghat to voice their demands for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. They allege discrepancies in the voter list review process, which the Election Commission has denied.

In light of the planned protests by various political organizations, security measures in the capital have been heightened. The disruptions have primarily affected ordinary travelers, who are bearing the brunt of the ongoing protests and traffic chaos.
