Tripura Election Commission Initiates Process for Urban Local Body Elections

Agartala, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : The Tripura Election Commission (SEC) has officially begun the election process for 21 urban local bodies, including the Agartala Municipal Corporation. Senior officials provided this update on Thursday.

Pradip Kumar Chakraborty, the state election commissioner, held an initial preparatory meeting with Director General of Police G.S. Rao and other senior civil and police officials. He instructed them to take all necessary measures to ensure that the elections for the urban local bodies (ULBs) are conducted smoothly and transparently.

Following the meeting, Chakraborty announced that the term for the Agartala Municipal Corporation and the other 20 local bodies will end on December 9. The meeting, held at the State Guest House, included the Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Manchuk Ipper, district magistrates from all eight districts, and senior civil and security officials.

The SEC has revealed that prior to the upcoming elections in municipal and town council areas, the Urban Development Department has released the final list of polling stations. This list includes 783 polling stations, covering the Agartala Municipal Corporation, 13 municipal councils, and seven town councils.

The final voter list will be published on October 15, following the resolution of claims and objections on the draft voter list.

DGP G.S. Rao indicated that personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will not be deployed for the ULB elections. Instead, the state police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) will be adequately deployed to ensure the elections are conducted fairly and freely.

Approximately nine lakh residents live across these 21 urban local bodies, with over four lakh residing in the Agartala Municipal Corporation area.

Meanwhile, the ruling BJP, along with the main opposition Left Front led by CPI(M) and the Congress party, has begun pre-election activities, including candidate selection.
