Jamtara, August 1: Protests erupted in Jamtara, Jharkhand, led by opposition leader Babulal Marandi, against alleged medical negligence that resulted in the deaths of a mother and her newborn at the district hospital. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organized a vigorous demonstration on Friday, rallying from the hospital to the district collectorate while chanting slogans.
During the rally, party leaders criticized the state government and district administration for their handling of health services, recruitment examinations, employment, education, infrastructure, law and order, and corruption. This protest follows an incident on July 17, when the death of a woman named Rina Devi and her newborn led to public outrage, resulting in vandalism and road blockades.
In response to the unrest, the hospital administration filed a complaint, leading to an FIR against eight named individuals, including BJP district president Sumit Sharan, district general secretary Kamlesh Mandal, youth wing district president Kunal Singh, and city president Pradeep Rawat, along with several unidentified persons. Marandi condemned this action as a tyrannical move by the government.
Addressing the gathering, Marandi claimed that the health system in Jharkhand is in disarray and that the government prioritizes its interests over public welfare. He raised concerns about the poor condition of hospitals and the inadequacies of government ambulance services. Allegations of corruption in the tender process were also highlighted, suggesting that benefits are being funneled to those close to the government.
Marandi further accused the government of failing to ensure that the state’s rich mineral resources benefit the public. He criticized the alleged irregularities in the recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), asserting a lack of transparency from the government.
Former MP Sunil Soren accused the administration of biased actions and urged officials to work impartially. Former minister Randhir Singh questioned the state of health services, alleging that the district administration operates under pressure.
Seeta Soren, a former MLA and BJP candidate from Jamtara, described the government’s six-and-a-half-year tenure as a failure, emphasizing issues related to health, employment, and education. She claimed that legal actions are being taken against youth who raise their voices for their demands.
