New Delhi, August 2: Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has expressed his sorrow over the devastating floods in Kerala that resulted in the deaths of eight individuals.
In a post on the social media platform X, Gandhi stated, “I am deeply saddened by the devastation caused by heavy rainfall in Kerala. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the eight victims. I pray that the missing individuals are found soon and that the injured recover quickly.”
He noted that the state government is making every effort to assist affected families and coordinate relief operations. “I urge all Congress workers and volunteers to support these efforts. Please remain vigilant, especially in hilly areas, and follow the instructions of the authorities. Kerala stands united during this difficult time. I stand with every affected family,” he added.
Earlier, Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan confirmed on Sunday that eight people have lost their lives due to rain-related disasters in the state, with 13 others injured and eight still missing. He also assured financial assistance for those who have lost family members, homes, and livelihoods.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister mentioned, “Discussions are ongoing with the revenue minister, ministers responsible for the districts, and district administrations regarding the disaster caused by heavy rainfall in the state.”
He reported that cleanup operations have commenced in flood-affected areas and urged political workers and volunteer organizations to participate in these efforts. “Full support will be provided by the government,” he assured.
Additionally, Chief Minister Satheesan stated, “According to the latest figures, 5,792 people have been relocated to 209 relief camps. Twenty-seven houses have been completely destroyed, and 196 houses have suffered partial damage.”
He assured that the state government will ensure assistance for the families of the deceased and those who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
Satheesan emphasized the need for continued vigilance in hilly areas. “Although the rainfall has decreased, preparations are in place to handle any emergencies. Elected representatives and volunteers are actively engaged in relief efforts. Government arrangements can be contacted for any needs,” he concluded.
