Jamtara, August 1: Protests erupted in Jamtara, Jharkhand, on Friday, led by opposition leader Babulal Marandi, against the alleged medical negligence that resulted in the deaths of a mother and her newborn at the district hospital. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organized a rally from the hospital to the district collectorate, chanting slogans and demanding accountability from the state government.
The incident occurred on July 17 when a woman named Reena Devi and her newborn died, prompting angry locals to vandalize the hospital and block roads. Following this, the hospital administration filed a complaint, leading to an FIR against eight named individuals, including BJP district president Sumit Sharan and several others, along with many unidentified persons. Marandi condemned the government’s actions as tyrannical.
During the rally, Marandi criticized the deteriorating healthcare system in Jharkhand, claiming the government prioritizes its interests over public welfare. He raised concerns about the poor state of hospitals and government ambulance services, alleging corruption in the tender process that benefits government affiliates. He also accused the government of irregularities in illegal mining and the sand, iron, and coal trades.
Despite the state’s rich mineral resources, Marandi stated that the public is not reaping the expected benefits. He highlighted alleged discrepancies in the recruitment exams conducted by JPSC and JSSC, accusing the government of lacking transparency. Former MP Sunil Soren accused the administration of bias and urged officials to act impartially. Former minister Randhir Singh questioned the state of healthcare services and claimed the district administration operates under pressure.
Former MLA and BJP candidate from Jamtara, Sita Soren, criticized the government’s six-and-a-half-year tenure as a failure, raising issues related to health, employment, and education. She alleged that youth voicing their demands are facing legal action.
