Prominent Politician Criticizes Fuel Price Hike as Exploitation

New Delhi, March 20: The recent increase in petrol prices has sparked significant political debate. Senior Congress leader and MP Pramod Tiwari launched a strong attack on the Modi government on Friday. He labeled the ₹2 per liter hike in premium petrol prices as exploitation and opportunism, demanding an immediate rollback from the government.

In a video message, Tiwari stated that it is unjust for the government to raise petrol prices when international crude oil prices are between $110 and $120 per barrel. He questioned why the government is not held accountable for this action, suggesting that if a dealer did the same, they would be labeled as greedy and opportunistic.

Tiwari accused the central government of failing to provide any relief to consumers when international crude oil prices fell, noting that they did not reduce prices during that period. He highlighted that the government had made substantial profits, citing earnings of around ₹30 lakh crore, which were claimed to be for offsetting past losses and preparing for the future.

According to Tiwari, the recent price increase, despite stable international market conditions, is a clear indication of opportunism. He asserted that the central government has made this decision out of greed, showcasing a failure to fulfill its responsibilities to the public.

He condemned the government’s decision and called for an immediate rollback of the increased petrol prices to provide relief to the common people.

It is noteworthy that due to rising tensions in West Asia, global crude oil prices have surged. Oil marketing companies have increased the prices of premium petrol by ₹2.09 per liter, effective from March 20. Government-owned companies, including Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Indian Oil Corporation Limited, have raised the prices of their premium petrol variants by approximately ₹2.09 to ₹2.35 per liter.
