New Delhi, June 8: A powerful offshore earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck the southern Philippines, resulting in at least five fatalities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his sorrow over the loss of life and property caused by this disaster.
In a post on the social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi stated, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation caused by the earthquake in Mindanao, Philippines. My heartfelt condolences go out to the grieving families, and I pray for the swift recovery of the injured. India stands in full solidarity with the people and government of the Philippines.”
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that the earthquake occurred at 7:37 AM local time, with a depth of 33 kilometers. Its epicenter was located approximately 32 kilometers southwest of the town of Maasim in Sarangani Province, near General Santos, which has a population of around 700,000.
According to the institute, the quake triggered waves as high as 1.4 meters. Local media reported that several buildings collapsed, and power outages occurred in various areas. Tremors were also felt in surrounding provinces.
In response to the earthquake, the institute issued a tsunami warning for nine coastal provinces, advising residents to move to higher ground or seek safe inland areas immediately.
It is estimated that the first tsunami waves could reach the affected regions by Monday morning, with potential impacts lasting for several hours.
Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos has directed disaster relief and monitoring efforts in the affected areas and urged residents to evacuate to higher locations.
This earthquake occurred in the sea near Mindanao, the Philippines’ second-largest island, which is known for being one of the most seismically active regions in the world.
The Philippines is situated in an area referred to as the “Ring of Fire,” where tectonic plates converge, leading to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
