New Delhi, July 22: The central government has taken significant steps to address connectivity issues in flood-affected areas of Assam. The Department of Telecommunications has introduced the Intra-Circle Roaming (ICR) service as an emergency measure to improve mobile network availability in these regions.
Currently, the ICR service is operational in the districts of Charaideo, Sivasagar, and Jorhat. This initiative allows customers of different telecom companies to utilize the available network of other operators when needed.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is scheduled to conduct an aerial survey of the districts of Charaideo, Sivasagar, and Jorhat on Wednesday to assess the flood situation.
The flood situation in several areas of Assam has worsened, with the crisis deepening. In the past 24 hours, 21 lives have been lost, and approximately 560,000 people across 16 districts have been affected by the floods. The administration is actively engaged in relief and rescue operations.
According to a bulletin released late last night by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, the most affected district, Sivasagar, reported 13 deaths in the last 24 hours. This was followed by five deaths in Charaideo, two in Golaghat, and one in Jorhat.
In response to the state administration’s request, the Indian Army has initiated ‘Operation Jal Rahat-3.’ So far, the army has rescued 150 individuals from flood-affected areas and relocated them to safer locations. Among those rescued are 73 men, 47 women, and 30 children.
The army has stated that an engineering task force is assisting in the relief and rescue operations. Special teams have been dispatched to the affected areas to engage in rescue, evacuation, and humanitarian assistance efforts.
