New Delhi, July 22: Tensions escalated during a CJP protest in the capital, leading to violent clashes between police and demonstrators. Officers from the Delhi Police reported that protesters engaged in stone-pelting and other violent activities, resulting in injuries to several police personnel. The police claimed they were attempting to maintain law and order during the incident.
Additional DCP Sandeep Lamba spoke to a news agency, stating, “The crowd allegedly began throwing stones during the protest. Police officers were trying to maintain barricades and control the situation when I was injured. I sustained an injury to my knee.”
Inspector Rampal Goswami of the Delhi Police also reported injuries sustained during the protest. He mentioned that he was on reserve duty at the Parliament Street police station when he was dispatched to the Connaught Place area, where the situation deteriorated.
According to Inspector Goswami, the police team was attempting to separate the protesters and remove them from the area. He accused the demonstrators of attacking police officers with sticks and throwing stones. He recounted that a stone struck his head, but he avoided serious injury due to wearing a helmet. Another stone hit his hand, causing injury.
The situation near the Janpath Metro Station also became tense, with allegations that some protesters attempted to overturn a police vehicle and set it on fire, leading to further stone-throwing. The police reported that several officers sustained injuries during this time.
DCP Rahul Alwal from North-East Delhi confirmed that a total of six police officers were injured during the protest. This group included Additional DCP Sandeep Lamba, Inspector Rampal Goswami, Inspector Ravinder Malik, and Sub-Inspectors Yogendra and Ajay. Constable Mohit Kasana suffered serious injuries to his head and near his eye.
Sub-Inspector Srinivas Sharma, who was injured during the protest at Jantar Mantar, claimed, “The protesters became aggressive. A large number of police officers were affected during the clashes. Demonstrators began gathering on the streets early in the morning, and by afternoon, the crowd had significantly increased.”
He noted that around 1 PM, it was reported that protesters were sitting near the SBI headquarters on Parliament Road. When police officers approached them to request that they clear the road, the situation escalated, resulting in an alleged assault, which led to a fracture in his leg.
