
New Delhi, May 23: President Droupadi Murmu of India formally welcomed President Nikos Christodoulides of the Republic of Cyprus at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday. A banquet was also hosted in honor of the visiting president.
During the welcome, President Murmu emphasized that the relationship between India and Cyprus is built on trust and goodwill. She noted that the bilateral ties have now reached the level of a “strategic partnership,” reflecting deep mutual trust and cooperation.
President Murmu expressed her happiness that India-Cyprus relations are entering a new phase, with rapid expansion in areas such as defense and security, technology, financial services, connectivity, and maritime cooperation.
She highlighted that Cyprus is one of the major sources of foreign direct investment in India. Companies from Cyprus have shown consistent interest in increasing trade and investment with India. The vast Indian market, digital transformation, infrastructure, and manufacturing capabilities present significant opportunities for Cypriot companies and investors.
The President pointed out that technology and innovation are emerging as leading sectors in India-Cyprus relations. She stated that India’s youthful talent, technological capabilities, and startup ecosystem can create new opportunities when combined with Cyprus’s innovation system.
She also emphasized the immense potential for collaboration in sectors such as semiconductors, renewable energy, green energy, space, sustainable development, and artificial intelligence.
President Murmu mentioned that during Cyprus’s presidency of the European Union Council, it could play a crucial role in enhancing economic cooperation between India and Europe, especially following the India-EU free trade agreement.
She appreciated Cyprus’s support on critical issues like cross-border terrorism and the need for reform in multilateral institutions. Furthermore, she reiterated India’s unwavering support for Cyprus’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
During the meeting, both leaders agreed that close cooperation between India and Cyprus could bring extensive benefits to the people of both nations.
