Prayagraj, August 29: The district administration and health department in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, have ramped up preparations to tackle seasonal infections such as dengue, malaria, and swine flu. Dr. Mansoor Ahmed, a senior physician at Tej Bahadur Sapru Hospital, stated that necessary arrangements for patient testing and treatment have been made. Separate wards, medications, and testing facilities are available for dengue patients. He urged the public not to ignore symptoms and to consult a doctor promptly.
Dr. Ahmed explained that swine flu can spread through the air. Infection can occur when droplets from an infected person’s cough or sneeze come into contact with others. Coughing or sneezing in public without precautions can significantly contribute to the spread of the infection.
He advised that individuals experiencing fever along with cough and cold should wear masks. Using handkerchiefs, tissues, or masks while sneezing or coughing in public can reduce the likelihood of transmitting the infection to those nearby.
According to the doctor, rest and adequate hydration are crucial during viral infections. Maintaining a strong immune system can also be beneficial. He noted that many cases of viral fever resolve on their own over time, with treatment primarily focused on alleviating symptoms. Paracetamol and other medications may be administered based on a doctor’s advice.
He also cautioned against the indiscriminate use of antibiotics. Not every viral infection requires antibiotics. They should only be prescribed if there is a suspicion of a secondary bacterial infection, as unnecessary use can lead to resistance.
Dr. Ahmed mentioned that his outpatient department sees about 150 to 200 patients daily, with approximately 10 to 12 presenting symptoms like fever, cold, and cough. Some patients report body and joint pain alongside fever. In such cases, doctors do not draw conclusions solely based on symptoms but conduct tests considering various potential causes.
He highlighted the symptoms of dengue, which can include high fever, rashes, pain behind the eyes, headaches, nausea, vomiting, extreme weakness, and joint pain. If the illness worsens, the patient’s condition can deteriorate rapidly.
In severe dengue cases, patients may experience dizziness, low blood pressure, and internal or external bleeding. Immediate hospitalization is necessary if these signs appear. Severe patients require continuous monitoring and treatment, while stable patients can be treated in the outpatient department based on the doctor’s recommendations.
To prevent dengue, Dr. Ahmed advised against allowing water to accumulate around homes. The mosquito that spreads dengue can thrive in clean water and typically bites during the day. Regular cleaning of coolers, old tires, pots, and any areas where water can collect is essential.
He recommended thorough cleaning of the home at least once a week and emptying places where water can accumulate. Wearing long-sleeved clothing and using mosquito nets can also aid in prevention.
