Thiruvananthapuram, September 2: Political tensions have escalated in Kerala following the Grand Mufti’s controversial statements and Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan’s response. BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar has raised serious questions about the alliance between Congress and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), alleging that constitutional norms and secular values are being compromised in the state. He urged Congress leadership to clarify its stance on the IUML’s alleged controversial and unconstitutional remarks.
Chandrasekhar expressed concern over the incidents occurring under the Congress and Muslim League government in Kerala. He criticized the IUML for promoting ideologies that violate constitutional boundaries. Statements prioritizing religion from Muslim League leaders have raised eyebrows. He questioned how Congress leader Rahul Gandhi can present the party as secular if the IUML’s politics is based on religious preference. The Congress government is reportedly dependent on the Muslim League’s support, which he claims influences its actions.
Chandrasekhar highlighted several controversies linked to the Muslim League, questioning the government’s operational methods. He also called for accountability from CM Satheesan regarding alleged offensive comments about Swami Ayyappa.
Additionally, he pointed out the serious issue of a journalist reportedly being forced to apologize after covering a statement from Kanthapuram. He emphasized that freedom of expression and speech are constitutionally protected in India. Chandrasekhar stated that if a journalist is intimidated for reporting, it poses a grave concern for democratic systems. He expressed support for the affected female journalist and her organization, asserting that reporting on an individual’s statements is a fundamental aspect of journalism and should not lead to targeting, even if it offends a political party or community.
Targeting Congress, Chandrasekhar remarked that while the party speaks about constitutional and democratic values on public platforms, it is a serious contradiction if a journalist faces pressure under its governance. Freedom of expression and independent reporting by journalists are essential for democracy. He insisted that no political party or community should attempt to intimidate journalists.
Chandrasekhar claimed that the political dynamics between Congress and the Muslim League are visibly impacting governance and public discourse in Kerala. He assured that the BJP will continue to raise these issues among the public and prioritize the protection of constitutional values in the future.
