Panaji, September 2: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar engaged with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) across Goa on Wednesday. He described BLOs as the foundational pillars of the world’s largest democracy and the primary point of contact between the Election Commission of India (ECI) and citizens.
Over 1,000 BLOs from various regions of the state participated in this dialogue. The event emphasized their crucial role in maintaining accurate and transparent voter lists and ensuring the smooth conduct of elections.
Addressing the assembly, CEC Gyanesh Kumar stated that the preparation of voter lists and conducting elections in India is carried out in accordance with the Constitution, laws, and directives issued by the Election Commission. He highlighted the significant role of BLOs in preparing and maintaining voter lists, particularly in Goa.
Referring to them as the first point of contact between the Election Commission and citizens, the Chief Election Commissioner noted that their work is vital for ensuring fair representation of every eligible citizen in the electoral process.
He praised the contributions of Booth Level Agents (BLAs) in ensuring the impartiality of voter lists, adding that voter lists and the broader electoral process are subject to concurrent scrutiny. Recognized political parties appoint BLAs, who play a significant role alongside candidates’ polling and counting agents.
During the discussion, short videos explaining the responsibilities of BLAs in Konkani and their roles in English were also released. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the electoral process and the responsibilities of various stakeholders.
To celebrate the occasion, a program showcasing Goa’s rich traditions and heritage was also held. Following this, BLAs participated in a question-and-answer session with the Chief Election Commissioner, providing them an opportunity to raise issues related to their duties and seek clarifications.
