
Singapore, May 27: Indian badminton player H.S. Pranoy achieved a remarkable victory against Indonesia’s world number 5, Jonathan Christie, on the second day of the Singapore Open at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. The match lasted 61 minutes, with Pranoy winning 10-21, 21-12, 21-18.
In mixed doubles, the duo of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto advanced to the next round by defeating Malaysia’s Wong Tien Si and Lim Chiu Sien with scores of 21-14, 20-22, 21-13.
Pranoy, ranked sixth in the world, made a strong comeback after losing the first game. Despite Christie leading their previous encounters 7-3, Pranoy took control of the second game, winning it 21-12 without allowing the Indonesian player to outplay him.
The deciding game was tense. Christie maintained an early lead, but the momentum shifted towards Pranoy in the final stages. Trailing 16-18, the Indian player scored five consecutive points to secure the match 21-18. Pranoy’s next challenge will be against Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew, who defeated India’s Kidambi Srikanth 22-20, 19-21, 21-17.
In mixed doubles, Dhruv and Tanisha won the first game, but the Malaysian players pushed the match to a decider. The Indian pair responded strongly, taking control at 7-6 in the final game and clinching victory 21-13 in 58 minutes.
In women’s singles, Malvika Bansod lost to Lin Siang Ti with scores of 21-11, 19-21, 12-21.
On Tuesday, Indian senior players P.V. Sindhu and the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty had a positive start to their Singapore Open campaign by winning their respective matches.
Sindhu defeated Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani 21-17, 21-18 in women’s singles, while Satwik and Chirag overcame Chen Ji Yi and Presley Smith 26-28, 21-15, 21-13 in men’s doubles.
The 2022 edition champion, Sindhu, leveled her head-to-head record against the fifth-seeded Indonesian player to 3-3 by winning in straight games. She established control early in the first game, leading by four points. After a quick comeback, Sindhu equalized at 16-16 and won the first game by scoring five consecutive points.
The second game was fiercely contested, with Sindhu taking crucial leads and ultimately winning the match in straight games. She will face Japan’s Riko Gunji in the pre-quarterfinals.
In men’s doubles, world number 4 Satwik and Chirag faced a tough match, losing the first game despite saving seven game points. They responded powerfully and dominated the third game, winning it 21-13 after an hour and 15 minutes of play.
In men’s singles, Ayush Shetty put up a strong fight against Victor Lai. After winning the first game 21-11, the Indian team could not maintain the momentum and eventually lost the next two games 14-21, 12-21.
