Political Tensions Rise in Kerala Ahead of Assembly Elections

Alappuzha, March 21: Political tensions are escalating in Kerala as the assembly elections approach. A dispute has emerged between Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and former minister G. Sudhakaran over claims of missed calls, intensifying political rhetoric.

G. Sudhakaran, an independent candidate supported by the Congress-led UDF and a former CPI(M) leader, has outrightly rejected the Chief Minister’s assertions. He stated that he did not receive any calls from Vijayan. Sudhakaran noted that he has Vijayan’s number saved as ‘CM’ on his phone, but no calls have come through.

A four-time MLA and former cabinet minister, Sudhakaran revealed that about two weeks ago, the Chief Minister expressed a desire to meet him during a visit to Alappuzha, but no further contact was made.

In an interview, Chief Minister Vijayan claimed he attempted to reach Sudhakaran three times. He explained that the first call went unanswered due to a busy line, while the next two calls received no response. Vijayan remarked, “After the third attempt, it seemed the calls were being deliberately ignored.” He also tried to facilitate a conversation through district secretary Nasar.

Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan responded to the situation, stating his trust in Sudhakaran’s account. He emphasized that despite their differing political affiliations, he has always respected Sudhakaran and considers his statements credible.

Vijayan clarified that changes in party positions are a normal process, taking into account various factors, including age. He urged that this should not be perceived as sidelining any leader. He acknowledged Sudhakaran as one of the party’s most respected figures, asserting that he has received due respect and support at all levels.

As both leaders maintain their positions, the controversy deepens, creating new dynamics in the electoral atmosphere. Sudhakaran is set to file his nomination on Saturday and will also participate in a roadshow.

Meanwhile, discontent is surfacing within the CPI(M). Former MLAs Aiya S. Potty and P.K. Sasi have joined the Congress and are contesting against left candidates. In Kannur district, V. Kunjikrishnan (Payyannur) and T.P. Govindan (Taliparamba) are running with UDF support. Additionally, three-time former MLA S. Rajendran is contesting from Idukki district’s Devikulam on a BJP ticket.
